Do something different with print

20 April, 2008

One of the jobs we’ve just completed for a client took a different approach to traditional print – and the results were stunning. Here are our recommendations…

Instead of a traditional price list and appointment card, our client wanted wallets and folders. The sample we were shown was a Prada wallet which had been stamped and varnished. The finishing was superb and we knew we were going to have to have a good look round to match the quality.

To start with we had to find a top notch card. We got samples from a lot of different merchants, but the one that really blew everyone away was the skin range from Robert Horne’s Curious Collection. If you are looking for something a bit out of the ordinary we really recommend you have a look at their range. The spec team are really helpful as well.

Our clients had seen cards spot foiled in white and really liked the effect. We went to visit Makeup Print Finishers in Bourton on the Water and they put us in touch with Central Foiling in Birmingham.

The job looks absolutely superb. John at Makeup had our original files, and sent details over to Central Foiling about how he wanted the files laid out for finishing. Meanwhile we’d sent the cutting patterns over to AB Cutters in Bristol – so by the time the foiling was done the forme was already waiting for the cutting and creasing. John and his team are total superstars – they worked all hours to get the card cut and folded, and the quality of the hand finishing is brilliant – every appointment wallet had to have a section punched out then folded and glued on three edges. There’s no glue residue and the precision is excellent.

Forgetting it was Easter (duh) meant that we had a real rush to get the job done but again – John and the team came to the rescue. We took a trip to Bourton (also forgetting that it’s packed on a Sunday!) enjoyed fish and chips then went to pick up the job. On a Sunday

Up at 5am the next morning and I drove it up to the clients.

It sounds like it was a lot of trouble, but actually because the team at Makeup had taken the time to show me round and explain all the processes, it wasn’t anywhere near as stressful as it could have been. I knew John trusted the people he had recommended and everyone did a great job. Plus of course nothing is too much trouble to get a good job for a client!

The other benefit of actually having a look round was that I got the chance to look at all the other options available to us as designers, and the processes behind them. Plus I found samples that although not suitable for this job, will certainly come in handy in the future.
