4 days in - still no water
26 July, 2007
Well we’re a lot better off than a lot of people here, and we’ve been pretty inventive…Dan’s made a shower Ray Mears would be proud of and I’ve collected enough water to wash my hair.
For Dan’s shower you will need:
- A bedsheet, some copper piping and string
- A pole with a rubber foot, a hole at the end and a spanner
- Nails and 2×4 wood
- 2 ltr pop bottle
- Screwdriver
- Container full of clean rain water
- An old washing machine hose
Put holes in the 2ltr bottle with the screwdriver and nail it to the side of the shed. Make shower curtain with copper pipe, bedsheet and string. Support the middle of the curtain using the pole with the rubber foot and a spanner stuck in the end. Put container full of rain water on shed roof, secure with 2×4. Put washing machine hose in rainwater, suck the end and drop into 2 ltr pop bottle. Pray neighbours are not watching. Enjoy shower.
Following the example set by the ever resourceful Dan, I managed to get a washing up bowl full of fresh rainwater (and brick dust) with my far less sophisticated invention, a bowl, 4 breeze blocks, 4 bricks and a bin bag. I’m writing this with a towel round my head and bits of mortar stuck in my hair. But it feels great.
And a quick note to journalists everywhere – you’re not the first one to think that your report should include the phrase “water water everywhere and not a drop to drink”. Sadly you are unlikely to be the last.
